Eyebright is an herb that commonly grows in Europe, Asia, and North America. It is a semi-parasitic plant, meaning it gets some of its water and nutrients from the roots of nearby plants. Eyebright is rich in beneficial plant compounds such as the flavonoids luteolin and quercetin, which have antihistamine properties.
Benefits of Eyebright
Eyebright has traditionally been used for thousands of years to support eye health. It is believed to have anti-inflammatory properties that promote reduced inflammation in the cornea cells. Eye irritation and inflammation are often caused by allergies, which may be triggered by dust or pollen. Flavonoids, luteolin and quercetin, inhibit immune cells that release histamine, a compound that aggravates allergy symptoms like watery and irritated eyes. Additionally, eyebright contains vitamins A, B, C, and E which have eye-nourishing properties. Minerals including zinc, selenium, and copper support healthy retinas and lenses.
