If you were to describe America in one word, what would that be? Perhaps you would utter wealthy, democratic, and free. What if you were visiting America for the first time and you had to describe in one word how American people looked like to your family and friends back home. Most likely you would say obese.
According to the Office of Minority Health, in 2010, Hispanic Americans were 1.2 times as likely to be obese than Non-Hispanic Whites. The NCHS special report on nutrition and chronic health conditions of Hispanics living in the U.S. concluded that Mexican-American adults born in the United States were more likely to have a higher prevalence of obesity than those born outside the United States. About 41 percent of Mexican-American adults are obese, significantly higher than the overall national average of 35 percent.
Obesity is described as having an excessive amount of body fat. This is determined by our body mass index or BMI. It is a measurement taken by dividing a person's weight in kilograms by the square of the person's height in meters. This excess of fat can lead to an array of health problems such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, gallbladder disease, arthritis, and certain types of cancer. Factors that may cause obesity are genes, lack of exercise, and processed foods.
Many Hispanic Americans are misled by advertisements and commercials of what we should be eating. This in turn has caused more fast food restaurants to open 24 hours to satisfy our hunger anytime. Food has been processed to gratify our cravings for salt and sugars, making us want more hamburgers, more donuts, more soda, etc.
If we continue to spend our money on bad food choices, we are letting the food industry destroy our health. We are also letting them damage following generations.
