Soda consumption affecting Hispanic Americans Health

What do supermarkets, fast food restaurants, gas stations, liquor stores, and schools have in common? If you guessed soda, then you are absolutely right. Soda is one of the most consumed sugar drinks in America. According to The Digital Universe, they reference a statement by NPR (National Public Radio) that Americans are consuming 20 percent more diet sodas now than they did 15 years ago.

Soda is a carbonated drink. Coca Cola®, for example, contains carbonated water, sucrose, caramel color, phosphoric acid, natural flavors, and caffeine. Other types of soda like 7up or Diet Coke® contain about the same ingredients plus other ingredients to help protect the taste. But, to sum these ingredients into a nutshell, you're basically drinking sugar. Sugar was first refined or granulated by India as early as 800 B.C.; Later European settlers quickly made sugar popular, which changed the eating habits of Homo sapiens entirely. Now, food scientists have used it to their advantage and not only added the sugars we know such as sucrose (table sugar) and fructose (found naturally in fruits), but they have also added those hard-to-pronounce sugar substances to cereals, snacks, coffee, and especially soda to please our taste buds and keep us wanting more. Sneaky!

With the growing number of Hispanic Americans consuming soda many health complications arise. Two of the most prominent are Obesity and Diabetes.  According to a New York Daily News post by Gus West, Saying adios to chips and soda, Sugar-sweetened drinks are amongst the chief culprits for America's obesity. Natural News.com states in an article, The truth about diet soda and diabetes: Diet soda increases the risk of diabetes, that sodas have a reputation for holding an excessive amount of sugar which makes frequent consumption of these drinks a potential for diabetes mellitus.

In order to achieve optimum health you have to discipline yourself by eating healthy (living foods), exercising regularly, drinking plenty of water, resting, as well as taking the recommended supplements. Recently, The New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's office has taken a stand to ban soda. According to CNN health, the brief states 'Due to take effect in March 2013, the ban is meant to combat obesity and encourage residents to live healthier lifestyles'.

Make a choice today! Choose a healthier lifestyle! Don't wait until the mayor of your state makes the choice to ban soda.
