This vitamin E contains four types of tocopherols: d-alpha, d-beta, d-gamma, and d-delta. It is an important antioxidant that protects cell membranes and other fat-soluble parts of the body such as LDL (bad cholesterol) from damage. Several studies have reported that 400 to 800 IU of natural vitamin E per day may reduce the risk of heart attacks. Vitamin E also plays an important role in the body’s ability to process glucose. Besides being a powerful antioxidant, vitamin E acts through other mechanisms, including anti-inflammatory effects, blood cell regulation, connective tissue growth, and genetic control of cell division.
